To enable children to develop their personal skills we have adopted the 'You Can Do It' scheme of work, in which children learn how to grow in confidence, develop persistence, organise themselves, and get along with each other and their work. This work underpins all other areas of our teaching, and helps children to think positively about themselves and their capabilities.

Children arrive at school wanting to learn. Each child dreams to be able to read, write, spell and count to infinity. Sometimes children find these dreams difficult to fulfill.

We believe that children need to find the keys to success, and that all pupils can improve their achievements and aspirations by applying a few simple ideas.

There are 4 'foundations' that support the success of achieving pupils. In order for children to work independently, they need to know about these 4 keys to success:

                        - confidence

               - persistence

               - organisation

               - getting along

When these ideas are understood and taken on board, it is surprising how much a child's self esteem improves. We notice the children thinking and feeling more positively about themselves.

At Shirehampton Primary we teach the children about these 4 keys to success, because we believe it will help them at school, at home and with their friends.

What do these 4 keys to success mean?  Read on . . . . .

CONFIDENCE means that you:

   - do not worry when you make a mistake

   - are not afraid to get it wrong

   - are happy to meet someone new

   - believe you will probably succeed in the end

   - can speak clearly, looking straight at people

PERSISTENCE means that you:
   - try hard when doing work you find difficult

   - listen carfully to a teacher or parent

   - stay on task and are not distracted by others

   - play after work in finished

ORGANISATION means that you:

   - know what you are trying to achieve

   - know how well you need to do it

   - have all materials needed to do the work

   - store & remember previously learnt material

GETTING ALONG means that you:
   - work cooperatively with another person

   - resolve conflicts by discussion, not arguing or fighting

   - keep your temper

   - are tolerant of others

   - follow the rules

   - make sensible choices

We have even written our own school songs for 'You Can Do It' - here is one of them - what do you think ?

(Sing to the tune of 'She'll be Coming Round the Mountain').

If you get along with teachers, you'll do well

If you get along with friends

Be quick to make amends

Get along with teachers you'll do well.

Yeah hah!

3.

If you organise yourself, you will succeed

If you organise yourself, you will succeed

You will find you're never late

Your timing will be great

Organise yourself, you'll succeed.

Yeah hah!

4.

If you show us you're persistent, you'll achieve

If you show us you're persistent, you'll achieve

If you always try your best

Be better than the rest

Show us you're persistent, you'll achieve.

Yeah hah!

5.

So be confident in all you say and do

Be persistent and your dreams may all come true

Do your utmost, nothing less

Then feel that true success

You can do it, you can do it, yes you can.

Yeah hah!

YES YOU CAN !
